Our Publications

This is a memoir of our lives and sometimes risky decisions. We relate our early years, meeting and raising kids, and building the farm, the organic movement and a healthy community. We didn’t always go along with what most Americans were doing, especially in the areas of diet and health care, employment, debt and consumerism, energy use, and culture. In this book we explain what we did, why we did it, and how it turned out. We hope it is both entertaining and helpful to people wanting to fashion a purposeful life.

    Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” “The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined non-conformists who are dedicated to…

Just stay at the center of the circle

“Just stay at the center of the circle and let all things take their course.” — Taoist Saying I was always taught that the humble thing to do was to not stick out, not be the center of attention, but make sure others’ needs were met. Great 50’s and 60’s advice for girls, for sure.…

From whence do we gather our inspiration?

As I was coming out of being sick this week, I struggled, as I often do when sick, with “black” feelings, so I was on the lookout for inspiration. Of course, inspiration is around us at all times if we are able to notice it, but here are just a few examples that really warmed…

    Christmas

Or Kwanza, or Hannukah, or Winter Solstice – whatever the way we each interface with this time of year, it is a very special time of year with giving, darkness, introspection and rest. I grew up in the Christian tradition with Santa Claus, Christmas pageants, Christmas trees, presents and the whole 9 yards. Certainly, as…

    Hog Slaughter

Before I move forward on this distressing topic (for me), I must step back a bit. I grew up on a hog farm. I learned early how to say “sueey” at the top of my lungs and held the pigs’ back legs when my dad was “cutting” them – this is a nice euphemism for…
