Certified Organic Meat

Considerations when ordering meat:

Meat Chickens

Our baby Kosher King cockerel meat chickens. Taken on August 28th, 2003

We will have two batches of 200 meat chickens available in 2010, to be slaughtered on August 8 and October 17. We raise Kosher Kings, a barred rock/meat cross that performs well on fresh grass. Meat chickens average 6+ lbs and will cost $5.75/lb if you order 1-9 birds or $5.25/lb if you purchase 10 or more birds. They live in portable outdoor pens and are moved to new grass every day.

Due to a state regulatory technicality, our chickens and turkeys are certified organic if you buy them before slaughter, but not after. There are no processing plants certified for resale of birds in Massachusetts, therefore consumers must purchase the birds live so we can have them processed at the plant on your behalf. We are totally comfortable with the cleanliness, efficiency, and humane technique used by our processing plant and stand completely behind their work. You end up with a cleaned, whole, bagged bird (with giblets and neck).

Pigs

A shot of our free-range Tamworths-Gloucester Old Spot pigs from 2003. Taken on August 28th, 2003

Our pigs graze on new pasture every two weeks and are fed certified organic grain and garden waste. Sometime late September to late October, they will be slaughtered at Adams Farm, a USDA and organically certified processing facility. In 2010 we will be selling our pork by the pound (for red meat). Pork chops, country style ribs, ground pork, and breakfast sausage will come in 1 lb packages (approximately). Roasts and spare ribs will weigh about 3-4 lbs. For orders of 50 lbs or more, pork will cost $6.50/lb; for orders less than 50 lbs, pork will cost $7.25/lb. If you would like to special order anything, please contact the farm. There will be no smoked or cured meat available this year.

Lard

We make our lard with the fat back and leaf lard from our pigs. We cut it at the kitchen table and boil it down on our wood cook stove in a 5 gallon stainless steel pot. MHOF lard will be available sometime in October or November.

We sell locally and also ship frozen lard in recycled quart containers to customers. Lard costs $15.00/quart. We ship lard 2nd day FedEx in insulated boxes so that it arrives at your door still frozen. The boxes are sized to contain 1 to 4 quarts. We charge $5.00 for shipping supplies per box. The FedEx shipping charges vary by weight and location. Some rates from last year:

We have sold all of our lard for 2009 but are buying and processing some fat back from our certified organic free range pork-raising neighbors to make lard for sale to you this winter. These are the same farmers from whom we bought our feeder pigs. They have excellent practices.

Turkeys

We will be raising 60 broad breasted turkeys on our farm in 2010. Like our chickens, these birds will live on range after brooding and be moved to a new location every day. The last month of their lives they will spend entirely free ranging enjoying their reflections in the first floor windows when not out foraging and cleaning up the fields. Choose between a hen (approx. 12-16 lbs) or a tom (approx. 18-26 lbs) when placing your order. The turkeys will cost $4.75/lb and will be available to pick up on November 23.
